Thrive Cannabis Opens South Reno's First Dispensary at Former Meat Shop

Thrive, a Las Vegas-based cannabis company, launched South Reno's inaugural marijuana dispensary on November 23 at 7300 S. Virginia St., transforming the former Butcher Boy Meat & Deli into a 6,500-square-foot retail space. This move fills a clear gap in the local market south of Plumb Lane, where no similar outlets previously existed. Founder Mitch Britten positions the store to serve Reno locals, hiring an all-local staff after initial training from Las Vegas teams.

Filling a Market Void in Southern Reno

Reno's cannabis landscape has concentrated north of Plumb Lane, leaving South Reno underserved despite growing demand. Britten identified this opportunity after establishing three dispensaries in Las Vegas. "What became glaringly obvious is that nothing went south of (Plumb Lane), so we went pretty hot and heavy down there," he said. The company gutted the entire building to create a modern retail environment, open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight, with a 25 percent discount on products through November 30.

Navigating Local Concerns and Community Ties

City officials raised objections over the site's proximity to an addiction recovery center, framing it as a moral rather than zoning issue. Thrive collaborated closely with authorities to address these worries, securing approval. Britten, who started the business in 2016 after moving from Denver, emphasizes serving local residents over tourists. He plans to maintain independence, rejecting buyouts from out-of-state investors common in Northern Nevada. "It’s more important to dance with those that brung you," Britten said, drawing parallels between Reno and his Denver roots.

Broader Shifts in Nevada's Cannabis Sector

Nevada legalized recreational marijuana in 2017, spurring rapid expansion but also consolidation through investor acquisitions. Thrive's local focus contrasts with this trend, aiming to build loyalty among Reno's year-round population. The new outlet reflects how cannabis retail adapts former commercial spaces to meet evolving consumer needs, potentially stabilizing neighborhoods through jobs and tax revenue. As Southern Nevada's industry matures, such expansions signal sustained growth beyond tourist hubs.
